Navagio Viewpoint

Looking down on the bluest water in Greece.

Navagio — 'Shipwreck' — is the picture that sells the Ionian: a crescent of white pebbles ringed by sheer limestone cliffs, with the rusted hull of a 1980s freighter half-buried in the sand and the sea glowing an improbable turquoise. The only way to stand above it is at the clifftop viewpoints near Anafonitria, in the island's wild north-west.

The platforms look straight down several hundred metres to the cove, a dizzying and unforgettable sight. Access to the viewing areas can change after rockfalls, so follow local signs and barriers closely and never climb beyond them.

The beach itself is reached only by boat from Porto Vromi or Zakynthos Town — many visitors pair the clifftop view with a morning boat trip to see the cove and the nearby Blue Caves from the water.

Getting there

The viewpoints are about 40 minutes by car from Zakynthos Town, signposted beyond the village of Anafonitria in the north-west of the island. The beach below is not accessible on foot; boat trips to the cove leave from Porto Vromi and the main harbour. Follow posted safety barriers at the clifftop.
